Key team and Advisory Board meeting in June
In June, IMPACT organized a key meeting in Lima, where the entire team met with the Advisory Board. This day was not only an opportunity to present the progress, difficulties and challenges of each of the work packages, but also to delve deeper into the critical issues that defined the direction of the project for the rest of the year. In addition to the exhibitions, workshops and training sessions were held for different groups of stakeholders, which allowed us to strengthen the exchange of knowledge and improve joint strategies. The media presence was also significant, making IMPACT's efforts and achievements visible to a broader audience. From these discussions, concrete plans were outlined for the following months and fundamental agreements were established that consolidate the working basis for the future of the project.
Alliances with key actors
In 2024, IMPACT consolidated strategic alliances that have been decisive in strengthening our impact. A key milestone was the strengthening of ties with the Ministry of Health (MINSA), which has allowed us to maintain a constant and productive relationship, aligning our actions with the country's public policies. In addition, IMPACT has expanded its support network by becoming an ally of the United Kingdom Embassy and the Pan American Health Organization (ORAS CONHU), two key actors that have added their support to our initiatives. These alliances have not only strengthened our operational capacity, but have also allowed us to access new resources and connections. Likewise, attendees at the conferences organized within the framework of IMPACT have formed an invaluable database, which not only opens doors to new opportunities for collaboration, but also serves as a space for exchange and learning for all involved.
Advances in Work Packages (WP)
WP1: We completed patient journey mapping and assessment of dementia care systems in Peru. Preliminary results will be presented in 2025, and one paper has already been accepted into JMIR Research Protocols. Additionally, teams in Argentina, Brazil and Colombia were selected to replicate the project. WP2: The IMPACT app, used for screening, is stable and fully operational, marking a key advance in technological implementation. WP3: We designed the pilot intervention of the care navigator system, which will be implemented in 2025. The connectivity tests in regions and the necessary materials are now ready. WP4: We finalized a six-month follow-up protocol and advanced a manuscript on dementia costs. Additionally, we adapted training in health economics for decision makers. WP5: We restructured the management team, strengthened strategic alliances and developed a communication plan. We also lead events, organize webinars and advance regulations for the care of people with dementia at the first level of care.
International call for scale-up
The international call for the scale-up of our initiatives was a resounding success. We received an excellent response from institutions in Argentina, Brazil and Colombia, who were selected to execute the scale-up. This enthusiasm not only demonstrates the impact and relevance of our actions, but also opens new possibilities for expanding our solutions in the region. The selection of these institutions highlights the diversity and potential of the projects being developed, and it fills us with optimism to see how these initiatives adapt and grow to reach more people affected by dementia.
IMPACT Collaborations
IMPACT has continued to mark its presence in the landscape of research and support for people with dementia, actively participating in various webinars and conferences. Our collaboration with key organizations such as ORAS CONHU, the INS (National Institute of Health) and Epicah has allowed us to position ourselves as a relevant player in the field of dementia. Through these collaborations, IMPACT has not only shared its advances, but has also created a space to exchange ideas and improve collective strategies to address the challenges of aging and public health. Each participation reinforces our mission to be a reference in research and support for caregivers and people with dementia.
Contribution to public policy projects
A significant milestone has been our contribution to the creation of public policies. This year, IMPACT has worked closely with the DSAEM (Directorate of Seniors' Health) and GBHI (Global Brain Health Institute) to develop two key regulations on the treatment of people with dementia at the primary care level. These regulations are essential to ensure that people with dementia receive comprehensive care from the early stages of the disease, significantly improving their quality of life. This joint work has been a crucial contribution to the implementation of the National Dementia Act, an important advance that paves the way for greater inclusion and care in the public health system.
Community involvement
Community involvement has been a fundamental pillar of IMPACT's work during 2024, with activities focused on caregivers of people with dementia. The LEAP (Learning, Engagement, and Action Program) workshops have been especially notable. Not only have they been a valuable process for participants, who have learned new tools and strategies, but they have also produced amazing results in terms of products and solutions that directly improve the lives of caregivers. These workshops have been a space for connection and learning, where the community has felt supported and empowered, which strengthens the sense of belonging and mutual support.
Opportunities and scholarships
The IMPACT Salud project offered two comprehensive scholarships to finance the Master's Degree in Primary Health Care at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia – Faculty of Public Health and Administration. The master's degree seeks to train competent professionals for healthcare work, teaching, research and management of health services linked to primary care.
For this 2025, the IMPACT and COHESION-I projects offer 4 comprehensive scholarships to finance the Master of Science in Epidemiological Research. The objective is to help future researchers develop the necessary skills to propose, carry out and present research projects.
