Health System Readiness
WP1 evaluates the capacity of the Peruvian health system to address the needs of people with dementia (PWD) and their caregivers. It conducts a comprehensive needs assessment, collecting qualitative data from patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers to identify gaps in current services and map the patients journey through the health system. WP1 focuses on understanding the barriers to providing effective dementia care, particularly in underserved regions such as rural areas. It uses this data to pinpoint areas where interventions are needed to strengthen the system.
WP1 will produce actionable insights that guide improvements in healthcare delivery, helping the system better respond to dementia and serve as a model for addressing other chronic conditions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Progress
WP 1 has completed data collection, conducting a total of 140 interviews for sub-study 1 and 40 for sub-study 2, along with validating the data from the latter. These activities were conducted across four regions—Iquitos, Huancayo, Lima, and Tumbes—and involved diverse stakeholders, including patients, caregivers, community healthcare workers, healthcare professionals, opinion leaders, and regional and national decision-makers. We are now preparing to initiate the scale-up phase in Q1 2025, expanding our health system readiness assessment methods to additional Latin American countries based on our experiences in Peru.
